With meditation, you can learn to train your brain and focus your attention.
From a neuroscience point of view, you can say that there are 5 categories of brain waves. From fast to very slow. The slower the waves the more time between thoughts and more opportunity to skillfully choose which thoughts you invest in and what actions you take.
To start focusing on the breath can help to give the mind a focus point, as breath and mind work closely together. Mind and breath will start to synchronize. When your breath lengthens your brain waves begin to slow down.
